Reading the board

Which class should I turn up to?

If you have never grappled, come to an LV1. If there isn’t one at a time that works, come to an LV2 anyway and tell the coach it is your first day — that room is built to absorb beginners and it happens every week.

LV3 assumes you already have a base. Open mat on Friday evening is free-form rolling and every academy in Portland is welcome. Study Hall is members only.

More on the three levels

Do I need to book ahead?

Not for a regular class. Turn up about ten minutes early so someone can show you where things are. For your first visit it helps if you let us know you’re coming, so a coach is expecting you.

What do I wear?

A t-shirt and shorts you can sweat in. No jewellery, nails trimmed. You do not need a rashguard or a gi to start — the only gi class on the schedule is Saturday morning, and we can lend you one.

How often should I train?

Two to three times a week is the sweet spot for progress you can actually feel. Consistency beats intensity — two classes every week for a year will take you further than six classes in one week and then nothing.

Can I drop in if I train somewhere else?

Yes. Visiting grapplers are welcome, and Friday open mat is explicitly open to every school in the city. Call ahead so we know to expect you.

Are the times the same every week?

Yes, the board above is the standing weekly schedule. Holidays and seminars occasionally shift things — those get announced in the gym and on Instagram.
