Which class should I turn up to?
If you have never grappled, come to an LV1. If there isn’t one at a time that works, come to an LV2 anyway and tell the coach it is your first day — that room is built to absorb beginners and it happens every week.
LV3 assumes you already have a base. Open mat on Friday evening is free-form rolling and every academy in Portland is welcome — $30 if you are dropping in from elsewhere. Study Hall is members only.
Do I need to book ahead?
Not once you are training with us — turn up about ten minutes early and get on the mat. Your first visit is different: book a tour, and an instructor will set the time aside to show you round and go through which of these classes you would actually be starting in.
What do I wear?
A t-shirt and shorts you can sweat in. No jewellery, nails trimmed. You do not need a rashguard or a gi to start, and when you sign up a rashguard and shorts are included — the only gi class on the schedule is Saturday morning, and we can lend you one of those too.
How often should I train?
Two to three times a week is the sweet spot for progress you can actually feel. Consistency beats intensity — two classes every week for a year will take you further than six classes in one week and then nothing.
Can I drop in if I train somewhere else?
Yes. Visiting grapplers are welcome and a drop-in is $30 for a single class, Friday open mat included — that one is explicitly open to every school in the city. Call ahead so we know to expect you.
Two classes are listed at the same time — how?
There are two mat rooms: a main floor of around 1,600 square feet and a second room of 800 to 1,000. So the 6 PM LV2 and LV3 genuinely run at once, in separate rooms, rather than sharing one floor.
Can I shower after class?
Yes — there are two showers on site along with changing space, which is what makes the 6:30 AM and midday classes work for people going straight on to a workday. Bring a towel.
Are the times the same every week?
Yes, the board above is the standing weekly schedule. Holidays and seminars occasionally shift things — those get announced in the gym and on Instagram.
